Friendship between President Bush and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel goes back to long before either man held his present office. At their meeting in Crawford, there were "peals of laughter" in private, and mutual compliments in public. Both men want to see the evacuation of all the Israeli settlements in Gaza, and a few on the West Bank for good measure. But the mutual back-slapping stops there, and agreement to disagree begins. Aconsiderable and vociferous number of Israelis oppose the evacuation in principle, and Sharon himself raises the temperature with mutterings about civil war.
