If Social Security is the third rail of American politics, then the first two rails probably belong to Amtrak. Despite proving itself woefully unable to turn a profit, Amtrak remains enormously popular among the political class and continues to receive massive amounts of federal aid: $1.2 billion in 2005 alone. On April 15, however, its trains not only failed to run on time--they failed to run at all.
