Jul. 9--Cabarrus County is trying to persuade a controversial Confederate heritage group to hold its national convention there in 2008.
In the next couple of weeks, the Sons of Confederate Veterans plans to decide whether to bring its annual gathering to the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center.
The county's tourism board recently approved an $18,000 grant for the group, even as board members gingerly raised the issue of who can use the county-owned arena.
Some SCV members have publicly stated concerns that racists are trying to take over the organization. The Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights organization in Alabama, agreed.
The group dismisses such claims and disavows racism. It says internal strife has ended, and it remains focused on preserving a Southern culture it views as constantly under siege.
