Marco Polo continue on their way toward recording everything the Strauss family ever wrote. This is the fifth edition of music by the elder Strauss alone, having already presumably completed the work of Strauss Senior's more-famous son.
The 13 pieces on the album alternate between waltzes and other, faster dances, galops, with all of them fresh and lively. Although the waltzes are early examples of the genre, dating back to a time when Strauss the elder and Joseph Lanner were developing the traditional Viennese waltz from the roots laid down by Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert, they sound remarkably more modern.
