Better late than never. My catching up on great recordings, I mean.
I missed this classic recording when it first appeared on a Mercury Living Presence LP in 1959, as well as when it was later re-released on CD in the early nineties. There was probably even a Mercury Golden Import in there I missed, too; I don't know. In any case, it was an unfortunate miss, but a wonderful catching up.
Paray's is the most joyous, infectiously exciting, and spontaneous Espana I think I have ever heard. My previous favorite, the 1984 digital record by Armin Jordan on Erato is still by no means entirely eclipsed, but Paray brings just that much more sparkle to the occasion.
