Given the production date, one would think that this release was never recorded with surround-sound in mind. However, it is also possible that Katz, whom I profiled biographically in the second edition of The Encyclopedia of Recorded Sound, did indeed look far enough ahead in 1988 to set up some microphones to pick up studio ambiance.
On the other hand, many Chesky releases engineered by him were recorded direct to two tracks, and even if multiple microphones were employed it is unlikely that any were set up to just record studio ambiance for surround channels.
