The Iraqi Baathists are hoping to return to power by provoking civil war. The Syrian Baathists are following the same terroristic logic in Lebanon. Their huge political mistakes of tampering with the Lebanese constitution in order to keep their man in the presidency, and then murdering Rafik Hariri, the former prime minister, caused such outrage that they had to abandon their military occupation of the country. Free elections then returned to the Lebanese the independence and democracy they had once enjoyed. Syrian dictator Assad and his Baathist comrades need to survive a sequence of events so disastrous to them. These are men long accustomed to the belief that winners kill, and losers are killed.
