The Fifth Amendment to the Constitution says that the government may take your property "for public use" so long as it provides "just compensation." Cities routinely take land to give to private corporations. The cities claim that they are promoting economic development. But if the mayor and the city council want to take land and give it to powerful corporate interests--and big campaign contributors--the "economic development" rationale will always be available. The Supreme Court, in Kelo v. City of New London, decided not to intervene to stop abusive land seizures by the government.
