SARASOTA COUNTY -- School Superintendent Gary Norris has called an extension of a special tax critical to the district's five-year education plan.

But Norris is facing a challenge winning over the School Board just to get his proposal before the voters this fall.

At least two of the five board members said they won't support an extension of the 1 mill tax, as Norris has proposed, arguing that the district doesn't need that much money.

"The only way to slow down our budget is to tax less," board member Frank Kovach said. "We're going to spend what we get."
