Jul. 3--Merchants in Montgomery did not collect the city's portion of the sales tax Saturday.

The city's sales tax "holiday" saved shoppers 3.5 cents on every dollar and was intended to provide relief to families during back-to-school shopping.

A manager at Target near EastChase Shopping Center loved the business he said the holiday was bringing in. "I think it's great. We've been extremely busy," said Marcus Stephens, assistant manager at Target.

Stephens said the increased business also could have been attributed to people preparing for Fourth of July celebrations.
