Susan Mallett, an administrative assistant at IBM's Cambridge, Mass., office, lost 30 pounds in the past four years without changing her diet.

She credits a company exercise incentive. In 2001, IBM started offering $150 cash rebates to entice its Cambridge employees to join its virtual fitness program.

"Honestly, the rebate is what first interested me," Mallett said. "But now the exercise has become a habit."

Her exercise regimen started with 20 minutes of walking three times a week. Now 42, she does seven hours of weightlifting, walking, belly dancing and yoga a week.

Mallett also joined an IBM smoking cessation program, which yields another $150 rebate. Fourteen months ago, she quit her 20-year cigarette habit.

Why is IBM spending money on such programs?
