Byline: AMY REEVES
Most people who've suffered bouts of depression or anxiety can tell you: It's never worse than at 3 in the morning.
Sleep trouble is a common symptom of mood disorders like depression. For Sepracor, maker of the new insomnia drug Lunesta, that signals an opportunity.
Last month Sepracor presented data from new studies that combined Lunesta with fluoxetine, better known as Prozac. The 10-week studies, each with a few hundred patients, found improved sleep and hinted Lunesta might help with the underlying depression.
The positive results have implications for Sepracor as well as the herd of similar drugs coming down the pipe from Neurocrine Biosciences, Sanofi-Aventis, Japan's Takeda and Merck.
Sepracor Chief Financial Officer David Southwell spoke to IBD about what the studies found.
