2 Cynthia McKay's home-based gift basket business that she launched in 1992 was healthy, but she kept getting a niggling sense that it could be something more.
"I needed a new direction in order to expand," she said recently. "I had no business or retail experience, so I had no real idea as to what I should do. I didn't have the money to purchase a business consultant."
McKay, an attorney by training, started to accept that perhaps her venture would always be small-time. That's when she had a strange dream. "I was at Starbucks having a martini, and then I had the idea to franchise the business," she said.
Instead of writing off the dream, McKay, chief executive of Le Gourmet Gift Basket Inc., wrote it down. Now, nearly a decade later, she oversees 510 gift basket franchises around the world.
"Thank goodness I'm not an insomniac," she said.
