Pfizer drops HIV therapy effort
The drug firm will not continue developing its capravirine drug, saying that 2 midstage trials showed that capravirine didn't boost the effectiveness of standard triple-drug HIV therapies in patients who didn't respond to available antiretroviral therapies. Pfizer's returning the drug rights to Shionogi. It also ended its asthma collaboration with German drug maker Altana. Shares fell 1.5% to 27.10.
Coventry Health backs Q2 views
The health plan provider said it "remains comfortable" with Q2 views of $1.12-$1.14 a share, in line with views, despite a planned 2 cents a share charge from writing off $5.4 mil in deferred financing costs and taking a gain on a sale from investments. Coventry Health Care slipped 15 cents to 70.60.
Amedisys to buy home health firm
The provider of home nursing services will pay $106 mil for Housecall Medical Resources, an operator of 57 home health agencies in the Southeast. Amedisys expects the purchase to lift '05 per share profit by 5-10 cents a share and boost '06 profit by 25-30 cents. Amedisys will finance the deal with cash and a $75 mil, 5-year secured credit facility. Shares rose 2.5% to 37.70.
