1Sandra Day O'Connor, 75, the first woman on the Supreme Court and a moderate who often controlled the outcome on abortion, affirmative action and other issues, announced her retirement after 24 years. 2President Bush said he would nominate a Supreme Court justice fast enough to fill the vacancy by the time the court resumes work in Oct. It's been 11 years since the last opening on the court. Crude Roars Back To Near $59
3After falling $4.04 over the prior 3 days, Aug. crude jumped $2.25 to $58.75 a barrel, rising above $59 intraday ahead of the long holiday weekend. Heating oil futures set a new high as gasoline futures also jumped. Still, despite hitting an intraday record of $60.95 on Monday, crude ended the wild week down $1.09. More on B15
