Byline: SEAN HIGGINS
Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman on the Supreme Court and a swing vote on key issues, announced her resignation Friday.
Political groups on the right and left immediately began mobilizing for a knockdown, drag-out summer confirmation fight for her replacement.
O'Connor is the first justice to step down in 11 years.
President Bush praised O'Connor, but didn't hint whom he will pick. He has often cited conservative Justice Antonin Scalia as his model. Rumors were rampant in Washington regarding nominees.
O'Connor said in her letter to the president, "It has been a great privilege, indeed, to have served as a member of the court for 24 terms."
She gave no reason for leaving, but hinted her age, 75, was a factor.
