Americans' belief that the United Nations is doing a good job on the problems it faces has dropped almost 20 points since Gallup first asked about the institution in 1953. In another question asked this year, 64 percent felt that the organization played a necessary role. That's down sharply from 85 percent in 1997. Still, Americans believe there is value in being a part of the United Nations. In early 2005, only 13 percent said we should give up membership. More people see the U.N. as anti- than pro-American.
