Jul. 1--Thailand faces possible blackouts or brownouts as early as the hot season next year because electricity reserves have fallen to a critical level, an energy expert said yesterday.
Piyasvasti Amranand, a former energy planner, told a seminar that reserves had fallen from 20 percent to 15 percent during the past year, mainly because of a huge demand surge of 10 percent during 2004.
Continuing increases in demand are likely to send current reserves below the 15 percent level, and peak consumer use during the 2006 hot season could cause brownouts or even blackouts, he said.
