This is the story of James J. Braddock. Nice guy, born 1905, family man; takes up boxing, prospers, loses his touch; suffers in the Great Depression, breaks a hand, quits the ring; gets another chance, wins from nowhere, rises again, and winds up as Heavyweight Champion of the World; dies in 1974.
