Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff was not only a mystical philosopher whose acolytes included John G. Bennett, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Katherine Mansfield, but also a composer and collector of folk and spiritual music and lore from many Eastern traditions. The music he absorbed on his travels had a deep influence on the music he composed (with a significant amount of assistance from pianist Thomas Alexandrovich de Hartmann) to facilitate contemplative dancing at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man. Whether Gurdjieff was a genuine prophet or a pseudo-mystical humbug remains a matter of dispute, but he was at least a moderately talented composer of interesting melodies, eleven of which are given impressionistic and improvisatory treatments here by cellist Anja Lechner ...
