This CD reissue is cobbled together from two LP releases of the 1970s: the Guarneri Quartet's performance of Schubert's one-movement Quartettsatz was recorded in 1970 and released on the RCA label in 1971 as LSC 3285; their recording of the C major string quintet, which features second cellist Leonard Rose, dates from 1975 and was originally issued in that year as RCA ARL1-1154. This is the first time either recording has been issued on compact disc.
