Jun. 26--An artificial lens for the eye that corrects near and distance vision and also prevents the development of cataracts is now available in the Catawba Valley.
The new AcrySof Restor replacement implant helps people 40 and older see at all ranges without corrective eyewear, including reading glasses, said Dr. R. E. "Trey" Oursler III, who offers the new technology.
"This is the future of vision correction -- we will be doing lens replacement for everybody 50 and older who desire to be independent of glasses and using Lasik primarily on younger patients," he said.
The Food and Drug Administration recently approved the procedure, and its studies showed about 80 percent of patients never wore glasses again, Oursler said. Fifteen percent wore glasses occasionally and 5 percent wore glasses all the time.
