Debby Shorley, the new president of the Chartered Institute of Librarians and Information Professionals (Cilip), is accustomed to speaking her mind. Not everyone likes this.
Shorley's inaugural address as Cilip president in April 2005, for instance, ruffled a few feathers. She told her audience that it was "unacceptable" for any Cilip councillors not to carry out their Cilip duties because they were too busy in their day jobs. "Cilip cannot carry absentee councillors," she said, and told councillors not to get bogged down in detail, in order to avoid making difficult, big decisions.
