Leadership that transforms
It was great to meet up with Linda Stoddart at the UN HQ last month in Manhattan. The library is embarking on an ambitious programme to modernise and overhaul its services, transforming the way that its clientele perceives it and how they use the resources it delivers.
No easy task, and one that many library managers in the UK are now grappling with (Cilip's new president, Debby Shorley, profiled in this issue, is another striking example of someone who has seen the future and embraced its imperatives).
Stoddart's approach, dictated by the nature of the organisation, is one of careful, determined advance. With a user base that is so diverse (from the richly resourced techno-savvy West, to the poorest of nations struggling with more mundane realities - you can't eat "knowledge management"), she has a lot to contend with.
