Few professions are quite as rigid as that of a college professor. Six years 'til tenure, then up or out. Work 50 hours a week or more for the next 30 years and retire at 65 or 70, ready or not. At least that's how it was until changes in laws and policies started to open flexible possibilities for serious scholars who also wanted a life.

Women faculty approach tenure in the same years they might otherwise be having babies. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 entitles new parents to 12 weeks unpaid leave. Many universities supplement this by adjusting workloads or tenure clocks.
