Three significant events are coming together in these early years of the 21st century:

* the fast-approaching "retirement" age of the boomers

* the expectation of perhaps 30 active post-retirement years for healthy middle-aged adults

* the globalization of the information age

We know that old age is another normal developmental stage of life. With the ever-increasing speed at which knowledge and complex technology advances, elders must learn to cope with technology's changes and the obsolescence of much of what they learned.

How many of them go on unexpectedly to enrich their communities and create new lives for themselves? Answers to these questions become increasingly important as the first wave of baby-boomers enters their sixth decade.
