Newly revised SAT exam still draws fire.(NEWSWATCH)(Brief Article)
The new SAT timed writing test "sends troubling messages about writing," according to the National Council of Teachers of English.
Added in March, the new component is not an effective way to measure students' writing ability, the group noted in a recent report. In fact, the new section may cause English teachers to teach students "formulaic writing" instead of high-quality writing--just to prepare for the test.
Three more colleges recently announced dropping the SAT requirement for admission: The College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, Lawrence University in Wisconsin and St. Lawrence University in New York.
