NIGHT-SHIFT 
 
   Waiting for light 
   I breathe in, and out. 
   There was a nightmare riding hard 
   its neck all flecked with sweat, 
   hoof-beat and heart-beat 
   racing past my severed head 
   face upwards in a swamp. 
   I knew the thud of panic, 
   legs that would not move. 
 
   Thought brings no relief, 
   dawning fears are worse for being real. 
   Deadlines leer, a quarrel unresolved. 
   At last a peal of magpies
