WHILE OPERA PLOTS can rarely be regarded as models for ethical, moral or socially acceptable behaviour, they can often raise controversial issues either deliberately or by coincidental inference. These issues are rarely original with a particular opera, being historically, sometimes anachronistically, exploited. It is my intention in this article to examine some of these matters in three operas--one immensely popular, one barely known, and one halfway between the two--in which rape and murder are central to the plot.
