One of the Valley's oldest and largest printers rode into the Arizona sunset in 1992, while publishing firms reported mixed results for the year.

After nearly a year in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Messenger Graphics Inc. in September lost its bid to secure new financing. The company's assets were auctioned off, ending a decades-long presence in Phoenix. Primarily the victim of the America West Airlines bankruptcy, the firm also fell prey to a market oversaturated with large-format printing capacity as well as changes in desktop publishing technology.

In October, Sun Valley Newspapers Inc. also filed for protection under the bankruptcy code, about one year …
