If I am paraphrasing Despair Is "The Sickness Unto Death" correctly, Kierkegaard argues that the human soul sometimes experiences a crisis in which the self is felt and perceived to be totally unacceptable and totally unchangeable. During this torturing conflict, the desire for an impossible change and the desire for death tear at the soul. And this midnight convinces the man who suffers it that hope is futile. The ability to endure and master this psychic condition generates and informs much of the work of James Wright. Perhaps the end of one of his greatest poems, "To The Muse," will serve to illustrate:
I don't blame you, I know The place where you lie. ...
