Byline: REINHARDT KRAUSE
WildBlue took flight on Thursday.
The privately held startup is launching a satellite Internet service that targets rural areas that have little or no access to the more conventional broadband service offered by phone and cable firms, DSL and cable modem hookups.
Denver-based WildBlue faces one major rival, DirecWay, a satellite service operated by Hughes Network Systems, also privately held.
On Tuesday, DirecWay said its subscriber number had surpassed 250,000, which it said represented double-digit growth from fourth-quarter 2004.
WildBlue customers, like DirecWay's, will need satellite dishes attached to a roof or a spot outside their home to get Internet access.
The service will cost more than most cable modem or DSL services.
