The man who commissioned EastEnders says it's time to wake up to the hi-tech future of the BBC.
1984: Having worked at the Mirror, in the family theatrical agency business and at LWT, Michael Grade (pictured) joins the BBC as the controller of BBC1. His most famous early move is to commission EastEnders.
1988: Grade is appointed the chief executive of Channel 4 and is quickly dubbed 'Britain's pornographer-in-chief' by the Daily Mail - the paper's delicate sensibilities having been scandalised by some swearing on a late-night show. But with a popular schedule based on US imports, the channel actually becomes more mainstream - and profitable - under his tenure.
1997: Grade begins a seven-year period outside senior TV management (though he accepts media company directorships during this period). He becomes the chief executive of First Leisure, then the chairman of Pinewood-Shepperton Studios, then, in 2001, the Camelot chairman.
