I purchased a 2003 Sylvan 1650 SC Expedition new with a 2003 60 hp Mercury four-stroke. I mainly use this rig for fishing and have been pretty satisfied with it, but I have one issue with its performance. With two people aboard, it jumps up on plane easily and requires little throttle to keep it there. However, with three people in the boat, it struggles to get up on plane. This is with minimal fishing gear, maybe six rods, a tacklebox, small cooler and a pretty full gas tank.
I have tried every position of the power tilt. The prop I have on the engine is stamped 2078T 13, and is in new condition with no gouges or nicks. Top-end speed with two people is about 34 mph, according to my speedo. It is about 32 mph on my GPS and the engine is reaching close to the recommended wide-open-throttle (WOT) rpm with the power tilt adjusted (5700 to 5900). When I do get it up on plane with three people, top-end speed is still good at around 30 mph. I also notice that the slightest waves cause the boat to porpoise a little, even when trying to trim it out with the power tilt. On calm water, it is smooth.
