The Humminbird (334/687-0503; humminbird.com) 987c's most striking feature is its wide, high-resolution color display, but there are other attractions inside. Dual microprocessors deliver fast, full-screen sonar and mapping updates, and help the triple-channel sonar transmitter/receiver manage four operating frequencies. The unit can look down with 200 kHz, 50 kHz or both, and it can scan to each side with 455 kHz for the best detail or 262 kHz for a longer reach.

A simple, two-stage menu allows users to manage everything. Experienced users can select an advanced operating mode for increased manual control of most of the features. Three neat, programmable "radio button" keys are a stand-out feature. Once programmed, a single touch of each button brings up a custom screen view incorporating a user-selected combination of features and adjustments.
