Startup gear maker BigBand Networks has pounced on the cable TV industry's shift to digital networks.
BigBand makes electronic gear that lets cable operators route and manage video and data streams over digital networks. Demand for BigBand's gear is growing as cable operators switch from analog transmission to all-digital networks.
A few other gear makers, such as Terayon Communication Systems, look to capitalize on the same market.
Privately held BigBand has notched most of the top 10 U.S. cable operators as customers. Its revenue is expected to top $100 million in 2005, analysts say.
They say an initial public offering in early 2006 is possible.
Not that the company's in a rush. BigBand has raised more than $100 million from venture capital firms, including Charles River Ventures and the Time Warner Ventures unit of Time Warner. It used some of that money to buy the cable gear unit of ADC Telecommunications last year.
