Jun. 1--Local stocks closed down slightly yesterday after a volatile session over investor concerns about declining economic growth and uncertainty over the government's diesel subsidy programme.

The SET index fell as low as 661.17 in the morning session on investor concerns about an immediate hike in diesel prices. The government yesterday announced that subsidies would be gradually reduced over the next 10 months.

But the index recovered ground in the afternoon to close at 667.55 points, down 0.65, in thin trade worth 12.79 billion baht. Energy stocks led trade, down 0.12 percent, with communications down 0.22 percent and finance off 0.73 percent.
