Starting Wednesday, you can get a free credit report.
Credit reports, which used to be free only to those who suspected they were victims of identity theft, will be free to all as mandated by the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act.
Lawmakers passed the act to make it easy for consumers to order their credit reports and to help them detect and fight identity theft.
Residents of 13 Western states became eligible for the free reports first, on Dec. 1, followed by midwestern states in March.
Credit reporting agencies Equifax, Experian and Trans Union will each provide one free report a year to consumers who request it. They all expect a lot of calls and Web traffic June 1, so you may want to wait a few days to avoid long waits or possible online glitches.
