I enjoyed the recent article on exercise and would like to add a few more tips that I share with my patients ("Adding Exercise to Your Routine," The Rest of Your Life, March 15, 2005, p. 38):
* Make it fun. I recommend the physical education department at an adult extension program that includes dance classes. Dancing has a social purpose in a group, and group encouragement is important to any lifestyle change. At times, walking for the sake of walking is mindless.
Active sports can be fun. In many sports, competiton encourages participation.
* Vary activity. Mix up several activities on weekdays and weekends, such as biking or walking in interesting places. This provides "eye candy" and prevents boredom. Mall walking ...
