I found the Guest Editorial by plaintiff's attorney James S. Bostwick humorous at best ("The Chasm Between Physicians, Lawyers," March 15, p. 6).
Its theme is essentially this: We lawyers and you doctors are not so different, so we should respect each other and get along. But I suggest that most physicians see glaring differences in these professions. To name a few, we dedicate (on average) more than twice as much time in our training. After that, we work through nights and weekends. We work under stress levels that are incomprehensible to the average plaintiff's attorney. We often work for free (or worse); we don't have the luxury of determining which cases are "economic suicide." In fact, my current obstetric population is 43% Medicaid, which is definitely "economic suicide" in the state of Michigan.
