May 25--A facilities committee recommends the shrinking Clover Park School District close three elementary schools to save money.
At a school board study session Monday night, the facilities advisory committee suggested Clover Park consider closing Custer, Lake City and Oakwood elementary schools because of declining enrollment and the condition of those and nearby facilities.
Even if the schools close, the committee recommended the Lakewood-area district seek a $49.9 million bond measure to repair or rebuild aging schools in the worst condition.
"Our conclusions are data-based. It's a fiscally responsible thing to do to manage the district's finances," said Joe Vlaming, a district parent who chaired the 20-member facilities committee of citizens and district staff. "We certainly understand concerns by potentially affected areas."
