JDS to buy Acterna, maker of test equipment.

May 24--JDS Uniphase, the San Jose company that makes parts for fiber-optic networks, agreed Monday to buy privately held Acterna for $760 million in cash and stock in a bid to become profitable again.

By acquiring Acterna, JDS would expand its offerings of equipment that tests the performance of communications networks. JDS -- which last posted a quarterly profit in 1999 -- said Acterna will become a new business unit representing 40 percent of the company's sales.

"This is clearly one element in helping us get back to profitability," JDS President and Chief Executive Kevin Kennedy said in an interview.
