May 24--If you want to make money on Wall Street, go your own way.
That's the wisdom of successful stock picker Matthew Whitmill.
In the past 10 weeks, he managed a stock portfolio that grew nearly 26 percent, to $125,878.75. He took a contrarian approach by finding lesser-known companies that were underperforming and shorting their stock. He was betting those shares would fall.
"A lot of stocks seem to go down more than up. I decided to look for stocks that were doing poorly," said Matthew, who's 14 and finishing up eighth grade at Brawley Middle School in Mooresville.
