May 21--Wichita's traditional phone companies may soon be getting some compensation from Internet phone companies that use their networks for free.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruled Thursday that Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) providers must provide 911 emergency access.
That, say local phone experts, will mean negotiating for access to the databases owned by traditional providers.
"I think there will be some sort of fee structure negotiated," said Archie Macias, general manager of Wheat State, a rural phone service provider.
