How do women leaders reflect on their values in relation to how they lead their colleges? Is value reflection an important part of their jobs?
In 2003-2004, I conducted a study to explore these issues as part of my PhD dissertation in Educational Leadership and Organizations at the University of California at Santa Barbara. I asked three primary questions:

* How frequently do women community college presidents in California consider their values in their jobs?
* What types of leadership styles do they use?
* How do leadership behaviors such as decision-making, communication and evaluation reflect their values?
At the time of my study there were 108 community colleges in California. I sent a survey to each of the 48 that had female presidents and received back 27 completed surveys; I also interviewed seven of the women. This article shares the personal insights of these women leaders on value reflection and how they influenced their career choice to lead a community college.
