An award-winning high school basketball coach has negotiated a settlement after alleging that the school was trying to fire her because of her sexual orientation.
Merry Stephens was named "Teacher of the Year" in 2004 and "Coach of the Year" in three of the five years she was the head coach of the Lady Wildcats. According to Stephens, she was subjected to intense harassment by a new superintendent in 2003 due to her sexual orientation. In December 2004, the school board proceeded with motions to fire her with one and a half years left on her contract.
