As reported in WIHE last month, the US Department of Education relaxed Title IX rules recently. The policy clarification puts more responsibility on students and government investigators, rather than schools themselves, to show that women's athletics interests are not being accommodated. Many people are not pleased with the change.
Women's advocates are particularly upset with the proposed use of Internet surveys to gauge the success of a school in meeting the needs of female student-athletes. Non-returned surveys can be considered disinterest in athletics participation, according to the government.
