SPINIFEX is one of the most ubiquitous plants in Australia, the various species representing resilient adaptations to our infertile soils. Termites, similarly hardened by the continent's extreme conditions, have a unique ability to digest the nutrient-deficient plants, themselves becoming the staple diet of the innumerable species of lizards that have evolved as part of the continent's rich yet fragile ecosystems. The "hard" variety of spinifex, Triodia pungens, is the most drought-resistant species and is found in many arid regions, including the Gibson and Great Sandy deserts.

Not surprisingly, these deserts represented the last frontier of European exploration ...
