THERE CAN BE no sensible debate as to whether Australia should eventually become a republic without some agreement on what type of a republic we should be. It was the failure to achieve any such agreement which brought about the defeat of the 1999 referendum--many of the convinced republicans were unwilling to accept the flawed model on offer (and that was the fault of the fanatics of the Australian Republican Movement), and all were aware that there is nothing really wrong at present with the monarchical status quo.
