May 19--Two-thirds of diabetics in the United States fail to adequately control their blood sugar levels, raising their risk for painful complications and early death, according to the first national survey of this key measure of their health.
Blood sugar levels can be controlled through diet, exercise, and medication, but the new report finds that despite widespread awareness of this, many of the almost 20 million Americans with Type 2 diabetes nonetheless have dangerously high levels.
Excess amounts of blood sugar in the bloodstream damage tissues and thicken arteries and blood vessels, leaving diabetics at elevated risk for heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and loss of limbs.
